Since we started to encourage Malvern to accept refugee families just over two years ago the problem worldwide has grown a lot worse. The need for communities in the UK to accept refugees is greater than ever.
We are delighted that Worcestershire County Council has taken 12 Syrian families under the UK Government SVPR scheme (Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement). These families are now rebuilding their lives in safety in Worcestershire. However, to date no refugees have arrived in Malvern. We identify the reasons for this as:
- Lack of housing…..
- Perceived lack of jobs…..
- The fact that there are no other refugees here….
We want to change this!
We are increasing our efforts to create a positive and welcoming atmosphere for refugees and asylum seekers so that they can become part of our community and make an important contribution its life. We know that the key to this is to identify housing and to access employment opportunities.
We need help with this and in a number of ways, so we are looking for people for various roles. We know that there is a wealth of talent and experience out there among our supporters. If you are interested in taking on one of the roles listed below please contact us by email on email@example.com or call Ruth 01684 891810 or Dick on 07889 752169.
We want to get on the front foot with our supporters, letting them know what
we’re up to and getting them geared up to help refugees locally. We are planning to have a monthly newsletter on the Malvern Welcomes website and are looking for someone to edit it. If you have a nose for a good story…here’s your chance!
We also need someone to write press releases and to contact local radio stations. If you have a background in journalism this could be the role for you!
We have learnt that other communities have welcomed refugees by encouraging landlords to make accommodation available and we work with a great housing association, Spring Housing, who can manage the lettings over a 5 year period. So, can you offer suitable accommodation that we can use? Accessing suitable, affordable housing continues to be our greatest challenge. Are you a landlord or can you help in any way?
We know that after housing, getting a job is vital to new refugees. We want to be ready to help in what can be a difficult and bemusing process for someone new to the country. We need at least 6 volunteers to act as Job Buddies who would enhance the chances of refugees finding employment by:
- Identifying local employment opportunities in paid and volunteer sectors
- Registering interest of local employers
- Linking with local employment office and Chamber of Commerce
- Supporting refugees in preparing for job interview (cv, interview questions)
- Accompanying interviewees if needed
- Contributing to creation of local jobs pack
Pictures tell our story for us and our events get covered locally (and nationally!)We would love to have an ‘official photographer’ to record our various events. Could this be you?
